Valentine's Day cards come with a lot of pressure. The front already says something sweet in fancy letters, and the inside is waiting for you to say something better. Good news: you don't have to. A few honest lines in your own words beat any poem.
Below you'll find a simple formula, 40 messages grouped by who you're writing to and the mood you're going for, and a few ideas for making your card stand out.

A simple formula for any Valentine's card
When you're stuck, write three short sentences:
- Say something only they would understand. An inside joke, a nickname, a place that means something to you both.
- Tell them one thing you love about them. Be specific: not "you're amazing," but "I love how you sing in the car when you think no one's listening."
- End with a promise or a plan. "Dinner's on me." "Here's to many more." "Same time next year?"
For example: "To my favorite karaoke partner. I love that you make every ordinary day feel like a small adventure. Dinner tonight, and I'm choosing the song."
For your girlfriend or wife
- "You're still the best part of every day, even the Mondays. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "I fall for you a little more every time you laugh at your own jokes before you finish telling them."
- "Out of all the people in the world, I get to hold your hand. I still can't believe my luck."
- "You make home feel like home. Happy Valentine's Day, my love."
- "Thank you for loving me on my good days and my grumpy ones. I'm all yours."
- "If I had to choose again, I'd choose you, every single time."
For your boyfriend or husband
- "You're my favorite person to do nothing with. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Thank you for the coffee you bring me, the jokes you tell me and the way you always have my back."
- "I love you more than you love the last slice of pizza. And that's saying a lot."
- "With you, even the boring stuff is fun. Let's keep doing all of it together."
- "You're my calm on busy days and my adventure on slow ones."
- "I don't say it enough, so here it is in writing: I'm proud of you, and I'm lucky to be yours."
For a new relationship
Early on, keep it light. You want warm and genuine, not a marriage proposal.
- "I'm really glad I met you. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "Our first Valentine's Day together. Let's make it a good one."
- "I like you a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Happy Valentine's Day."
- "A few months ago I didn't know you. Now you're the first person I want to text when something good happens."
- "Thanks for making these last few months so much fun. I can't wait to see what's next."
- "I'm not great at cards, but I'm really good at liking you."

How to make it personal
Any message above works better with one small change that makes it clearly about the two of you:
- Swap in a real detail. Replace "pizza" or "tea" with the thing they actually love.
- Use their nickname. The one only you call them.
- Mention a memory from this year. A trip, a hard week you got through together, a ridiculous moment you still laugh about.
- Handwrite it. Even messy handwriting feels more personal than a perfect font.
- Don't copy the card's front. The printed message already says "I love you." Your part is saying why.
