Long Distance Love Letters: Examples and Ideas

By the Hey Love Letters team · · 7 min read

When you can't hug someone, words have to do more of the work. A long distance love letter is a way to close the gap for a few minutes: something they can read on a bad day, save on their phone and come back to when the time difference feels too big.

Below you'll find what makes a long distance letter different, eight short examples to borrow from, and a few ideas for making it arrive at exactly the right moment.

What makes a long distance letter different

A regular love letter usually celebrates what you share every day. A long distance letter has a slightly different job: it reminds them that you're still part of each other's everyday life, even from far away. The best ones do three things:

  • Bring them into your day. Small, concrete details of where you are and what you're doing make them feel present.
  • Name what you miss. Not just "I miss you," but the specific, ordinary things.
  • Point to the next time. A date, a countdown or a plan. Distance feels lighter when there's an end in sight.

What to write about

If you're staring at the screen, pick two or three of these:

  • Something that reminded you of them today: a song in a store, a couple at the next table, their favorite snack at the supermarket.
  • The last moment you were together, in detail.
  • The ordinary things you miss: grocery runs, falling asleep during movies, the sound of them in the kitchen.
  • What you'll do the first day you're together again.
  • Something you've learned about them, or about yourself, since you've been apart.
  • A plan for the future you're building, even a small one.

8 long distance love letter examples

Each of these is short on purpose. Change the names, places and details so it's clearly about the two of you.

1. For when you miss them

Hey you, I made two cups of coffee this morning out of habit and stood there looking at the second one for a while. It's the small things I miss most. Your cold feet. Your terrible humming. The way you say "five more minutes" and mean twenty. I'm keeping all of it safe for when you're back. Love, Ana

2. The countdown

Twenty-three days. I know because there's a calendar on my fridge with big red Xs, and my roommate thinks I've lost it. Maybe I have. But every X is one day closer to picking you up at the airport, and I've already decided I'm going to be the person with the embarrassing sign. See you soon (but not soon enough), Ryan

3. Across time zones

Good morning, from my good night. It's always a little strange that you're starting your day while I'm ending mine. But I like knowing that the last thing I do before sleep is think about you, and the first thing you do when you wake up is read this. Have a good day out there in my tomorrow. Yours, Kai

4. The reassurance letter

Lily, I know the distance has been hard lately, and I know some days you wonder if it's worth it. So, in writing, where you can reread it whenever you need to: it is. You are. We are. I'd rather love you from far away than anyone else from up close. Hang in there. I'm right here, just a little farther than usual. Always, Nate

5. For him, after a visit

Mark, The apartment is too quiet since you left. Your hoodie is on the chair and I'm not moving it. Thank you for this weekend: the pancakes, the long walk, the movie we didn't finish because we kept talking. It was exactly what I needed. Already counting down to the next one, Claire

6. For her, on a hard day

Hey love, I wish I could be there tonight with takeout and that terrible movie you pretend not to like. Since I can't, here's what I'd say if I were sitting next to you: you're doing so much better than you think. I'm proud of you. And tomorrow will be easier. Call me when you're ready. I'll be up. Love, Sam

7. The future plans letter

Here's my list for when we finally live in the same city: 1. Cook dinner together on a Tuesday for no reason. 2. Get a plant and actually keep it alive. 3. Never say goodbye at an airport again. I know we'll get there. I'm already practicing the plant part. Love, Eli

8. The just-because note

No news, no reason, no occasion. Just a reminder that somewhere a few hundred miles away, someone is thinking about you and smiling like an idiot. That's me. I'm the idiot. Love you, Jo

What to avoid

  • Making it a complaint about the distance. It's fine to say it's hard. Just don't let the whole letter be about how much it hurts.
  • Keeping score. Who visits more, who calls first, who's busier. Save it for a conversation.
  • Overpromising. "I'll call every single night" sounds romantic and becomes pressure. Promise what you can keep.
  • Waiting for a special date. A random letter in the middle of a long stretch apart often means the most.

Creative ways to send it

  • Time it. Send it so it arrives when they wake up, land after a flight, or finish a tough day at work.
  • Mail a real one. International mail is slow, which is half the charm. Write the date on it so they know when you were thinking of them.
  • Hide notes before you leave. After a visit, tuck short notes in their jacket pockets or books for them to find later.
  • Send a page they can open anywhere. A digital letter arrives instantly, in any time zone, and can carry the photos from your last visit and the song you both had on repeat.

Close the distance a little. With Hey Love Letters you can put your letter on one page with up to 12 photos, your song and a counter of every day you've been together, then send it as a private link. It's one of our favorite long-distance relationship gifts, because it arrives the second you hit send. Birthday coming up while you're apart? Here's what to write in a birthday card for your girlfriend.
