Her birthday is coming, the gift is (hopefully) sorted, and now there's a card with a blank space waiting for you. The message is the part she'll keep, so it's worth getting right. It doesn't have to be long. It has to sound like you and feel like it was written for her, not for "a girlfriend."
Below is a quick formula, then 35 messages for different moods and stages of a relationship. Borrow freely, but swap in your own details wherever you can.

A simple formula for a birthday card
- Happy birthday, plus her name or nickname. Starting with the name you actually call her makes it personal from the first word.
- One thing you love about her, as specific as possible. Not "you're beautiful" but "the way you dance in the kitchen when you think nobody's watching."
- A wish for her year. Something real: a goal she's working on, a trip you've planned, more rest, more fun.
- Sign off like yourself.
For example: "Happy birthday, Em! I love how you make friends with literally every dog we pass. I hope this year brings you that promotion, a lot more sleep and our trip to Lisbon. All my love, Josh."
Sweet and romantic
- "Happy birthday to the girl who makes every ordinary day feel like a celebration."
- "The world got a lot better the day you were born. I'm just lucky I get to be in your part of it."
- "I hope you know how loved you are today, and every day after."
- "Of all the birthdays in the world, yours is the one I'm most grateful for."
- "You make me want to be a better person, and you make it easy to try. Happy birthday, love."
- "Another year of you being the best thing that ever happened to me."
- "Happy birthday to my favorite person to do nothing with."
- "I'd celebrate you every day if you'd let me. Today you have to let me."
Funny
- "Happy birthday to the only person allowed to steal my hoodies."
- "You don't look a day older than the last time I said that."
- "Happy birthday! I got you the best gift ever: me. Again. No returns."
- "I'll let you pick the restaurant today. Just today. Don't get used to it."
- "Another year older and still way out of my league."
- "Happy birthday to the person who knows exactly how much cake I'm going to eat and loves me anyway."
- "Today we celebrate you. Tomorrow we go back to arguing about the thermostat."
Humor lands best when it's about the two of you. If she's sentimental, add one sincere line after the joke so the card doesn't feel like it's dodging the point.
Short
- "Happy birthday to my favorite human."
- "Here's to you, today and always."
- "You, me and cake. Perfect day."
- "The best is yet to come. Happy birthday."
- "Birthday girl, you're my whole world."
- "Happy birthday, beautiful. Love you more."
- "Can't wait to celebrate you all day."
